No GMOs in Unibroue Beers
CHAMBLY, June 27, 2001 - André Dion, president and CEO of Unibroue, today announced that all beers produced at his Chambly brewery have again been certified free of genetically modified organisms.
After the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) rescinded its certification of Unibroue products when the brewery mentioned this fact in its advertising, Unibroue decided to submit its entire product line to an internationally recognized laboratory that would confirm whether or not its beers were free of GMOs.
The SGS Group, an international organization headquartered in Geneva, whose members include more than 340 accredited laboratories in 140 countries, recently gave indisputable certification to all Unibroue beers, confirming that the products used to manufacture them are free of genetically modified organisms. Based on this certification, which followed a laboratory analysis of the beers and their ingredients, Unibroue will be able to resume exporting its products to Europe.
As a scientific organization, SGS Group has no objection to having the certification publicly declared in the statement "certified free of GMOs by SGS" in Unibroue's publications or ads.
André Dion can offer no explanation for this odd situation: "I don't understand CIFA's position nor its aims in this matter. It does seem obvious the agency was seeking to defend interests that do not correspond to its primary mission of protecting consumers from products that could damage their health!"
Earlier, CFIA had certified all Unibroue products as being free of GMOs, which would allow the brewery to export its products to Europe. It revoked the certification a few weeks later, alleging that this fact cannot be mentioned in advertising aimed at the local market.
In conclusion, Mr. Dion would like to thank all those who supported him in this situation-highly unusual in Canada-especially Greenpeace and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
